Distance to family and friends

Updated: May 28, 2023

About missing out on new paths and making progress with the extra boost.

If you were to ask me what I miss the most, my answer would be clear: my friends and family. It's also a nice feeling, because it shows me how important they are to me.

Fortunately, Corona was a good pioneer in a way. For one thing, I learned how it is when I'm just with me. I became calmer inside and realized how good it is for me. All over the world we learned to live our everyday life online. To be together without being together. And it worked! So the work could suddenly be done from the home office and on the birthday a video call was initiated.

Of course it's always best to see friends and family in person, I wouldn't dispute that. But if you can't see each other, it doesn't mean that you have to lose sight of each other. New ways of keeping in touch have emerged and it can work.

So I've been traveling for over half a year now and I don't have the feeling that I haven't seen my important people for that long. I also get the impression that both sides are grateful and happy when the friendship works at a distance. Both know it is based on genuine interest. The conversations are sometimes more intense because you talk less often and value the phone call more. I try to take exclusive time for the individual and not doing things on the side like I used to do sometimes before.

There are also days when I particularly miss not being able to just jump on my bike and go to a friend's house for a glass of wine. Or to be greeted happily at work. Or just need to get in the car at family gatherings to be able to be there.

But then I look around me here and see on what a positively adventurous path I am. I'm proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and following my heart. I appreciate my friends and family even more because they give me a sense of security. I know they are there and would catch me if things went really bad. This gives me an extra boost for my way and I am very grateful for that.
